Summary. Rapid technological development highlights the importance of examining the psychological factors that shape attitudes towards new technologies. The present study aimed to analyze the contribution of emotional orientation to variation in university students’ attitudes towards new technologies. The sample consisted of 106 students from Moscow universities, with a mean age of 23 years. Attitudes towards new technologies were examined across five dimensions: techno-optimism, techno-pessimism, technophilia, technophobia, and techno-rationalism. Attitudes were measured using the Questionnaire of Attitudes towards Technology by G.U. Soldatova, T.A. Nestik, E.I. Rasskazova, and E.A. Dorokhov, together with a scale of general personal attitudes towards science and technology based on the Special Eurobarometer survey. Emotional orientation was assessed using B.I. Dodonov’s measure as modified by E.R. Gorelova. Data were analyzed using regression analysis. The results confirm the relationship between emotional orientation and attitudes towards new technologies, with different aspects of attitudes associated with different predictors among the indicators of emotional orientation. Gnostic (cognition-oriented) orientation was the most consistent predictor: it was positively associated with techno-optimism, technophilia, and techno-rationalism, and negatively associated with techno-pessimism. Technophilia was additionally associated with praxic (practice-oriented) and communicative (contact-oriented) orientations; techno-pessimism with acquisitive (collecting-oriented) and aesthetic (harmony-oriented) orientations; technophobia with acquisitive orientation; and techno-rationalism with both gnostic and aesthetic orientations. Students in natural-science and technical fields showed a higher level of techno-optimism than students in social-science and humanities fields. The results are discussed with regard to the multidimensional structure of attitudes towards technologies and possible emotional mechanisms underlying the formation of subjective evaluations. The study contributes to research on the subjective and motivational foundations of attitudes towards new technologies.
