Summary. The results of verification of the assumption of the mediating role of education in the relationships of indicators of intelligence of the population of a country with its social and economic achievements are presented. First, it was defined whether the results of other researches demonstrating that educational attainment of the countries are the better predictor of social and economic achievements, than the intelligence of the population, will be repeated on the larger sample of countries. For this purpose, new data on the intelligence of the populations of countries and estimates of educational achievements obtained by combining the results of several international studies of attainments in education were used. Second, the direct and indirect (through educational achievements) effects of intelligence on socio-economic indexes were compared. Third, the correlation of dynamics of educational and socio-economic achievements from 2000 to 2015 was analyzed. Shown: 1) the results of the previous works were not reproduced when using more representative and exact data, there is no reason to argue that educational attainment is a better predictor of socio-economic achievements than intelligence; 2) the direct effects of intelligence exceed its indirect, through educational attainment, effects on socio-economic achievement. If educational attainment was a mediating link in connection of intelligence with socio-economic achievements, the size of indirect effects would have to be sufficiently high relative to the size of direct effects; (3) the dynamics of educational attainment have the non-significant negative correlation with the dynamics of socio-economic achievements. If educational attainment were direct determinants of socio-economic achievements, this correlation, on the contrary, would have to be positive. These results are not consistent with the hypothesis of mediating role of education in the relationship between intelligence and socio-economic achievements. The intelligence of the population influences the level of socio-economic development not only through educational achievements; this sets the task of the search of other ways of its influence.
